Want To Be A Participant
CRIS requires participants to have a disability that restricts their ability to explore the outdoors on their own and to have a desire to enjoy the benefits of fresh air and Mother Nature in her natural surroundings. From casual strolls through inner city parks and lakes to full-on backcountry and sea kayaking expeditions, CRIS has programs to suit all interest levels.
The following is an example of some of the types of disabilities CRIS has adapted its programs for on a regular basis:
| Amputation | Multiple sclerosis |
| Autism | Muscular dystrophy |
| Cancer | Paralysis |
| Cerebral Palsy | Rheumatoid arthritis |
| Chronic fatigue syndrome | Spina Bifida |
| Clubfoot | Spinal cord injury |
| Developmental disability | Stroke |
| Down syndrome | Traumatic brain injury |
| Hearing impairment | Visual impairment |
| Mental disability |
CRIS requires all individuals who require full-time care-aide assistance to provide a care aide during any CRIS programs. If you are unable to provide a care aide who is capable of participating in a specific program, please notify the program coordinator and alternative arrangements will be considered.
Pictures
Community Recreational Initiatives Society realizes the programs offered are of major significance in the participants' lives and therefore wants to ensure that their experiences are ones they can share with family and friends. The society makes it possible for people participating in our programs to have their experiences video-taped and/or photographed. For further details contact a society representative.
Professional Care
When deemed necessary by Community Recreational Initiatives Society or the participant, the society will solicit the services of medical and special needs professionals to accompany the participant on his/her outing. Types of trained professionals who could assist in the well being of the participant, as required, are physiotherapists, massage therapists, occupational therapists, and interpreters, among others.
